Guitar Signature Licks: Muddy Waters DVD
Arguably the heaviest bluesman ever, Muddy Waters literally electrified the Chicago blues world with the 1948 release of his first single on Chess Records ("I Can't Be Satisfied"). Bob Margolin played guitar in Muddy Waters' band for seven years in the '70s, absorbing his music first-hand. In this DVD, he shares the secrets of Muddy's solo guitar and ensemble work and covers slow blues, boogie blues, slide guitar and guitar bass lines in standard and open tunings. Bob even plays an original song that he wrote as a tribute to his former mentor. Legends of Bottleneck Blues Guitar
This video presents rare and historical recordings from 1965 to 1970 of some of the greatest exponents of bottleneck blues technique. Black bottleneck guitar styles were probably initially inspired by lap-style Hawaiian slide guitar which enjoyed immense popularity shortly after its inception in the mid-1890s. By 1903, it was already in vogue in Mississippi (and probably elsewhere) according to testimony from W. C. Handy, Gus Cannon, and others. Although particularly popular in Mississippi and Louisiana, bottleneck styles could be found the length and breadth of the rural South. While there were similarities among guitarists in some locales, there was no preponderant style or approach other than the abilities and imagination of the guitarist employing a slide technique. The musicians presented in this video are among the greatest exponents of slide blues guitar who ever lived and are ample testimony to the superb variety available in this style. Features Son House, Johnny Shines, Fred McDowell, Jesse Fuller, Furry Lewis, and Mance Lipscomb.

Legends Of Country Blues Guitar Volume 1 DVD
This DVD features rare footage depicting some of the greatest blues musicians who ever lived. As a genre, blues music was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century by rural black musicians. The music they played was alien to formula, possessing such skill and robustness as to be captivating, but few were widely known. The blues revival of the early 1960's brought many of the survivors to the forefront of traditional music. The technique of a Rev. Davis, the power of a Son House, the charm of a Mississippi John Hurt suddenly leaps into sight, becoming more tangible, more awesome and more human. The rare footage presented in this DVD is a treasure beyond imagining, drawn from a myriad of sources, depicting some of the greatest blues musicians who ever lived: Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Peter Williams, Josh White, and Brownie McGhee.

The Art Of Acoustic Blues Guitar: The Basics (Book/DVD)
Whether your favourite blues guitarist is Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Blind Blake, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy, or Mississippi John Hurt, studying the basic techniques presented in this program is the first step toward being able to capture the essence of their traditional styles. In this book, Woody Mann shows you practical ways to develop fundamental technique and offers you insights into the musical logic of blues guitar. Woody walks you through each song, explaining the chord positions and picking techniques. He teaches blues in the keys of D, G, C, E, and A, presenting a wide selection of classic blues songs and instrumentals from the masters of blues guitar. Included in this program are the basics of the Delta blues of Robert Johnson, the ragtime style of Blind Blake (the man with the piano-playing guitar), and the music of Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, Willie Walker, and Willie Moore. Each song illustrates how solo players approach the guitar like a piano, playing melodies and bass lines simultaneously. Developing this independent two-line picking technique enables you to get the feel, syncopation, and subtleties of the music. The songs in themselves are studies in acoustic blues technique and present the authentic elements of the acoustic blues sound and style including blues technique and ways to “play off” of the chords and improvise within a song. This program is recommended for beginning acoustic blues guitarists as well as electric guitarists and acoustic fingerstyle guitarists of all levels who would like to go beyond “pattern” picking and develop a more dynamic and syncopated sound.

The Art Of Acoustic Blues Guitar: Logic Of The Fretboard (Book/DVD)
The ability to improvise and create variations within a song is the essence of the guitar work of the great traditional acoustic blues guitarists such as Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Rev. Gary Davis, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. By exploring the ways that chords, melodies, and rhythms work, Woody Mann presents practical and simple ways to create variations in your playing. Woody teaches a new approach to seeing the fretboard and techniques for “breaking down” chord blocks into smaller “pieces” and connecting them throughout the fretboard. As he teaches the repertoire of the masters of acoustic blues, he demonstrates how melodies and harmonies can be derived from simple, movable chord shapes. This book is a method for relating the entire fretboard to the basic first position chord shapes that we all learn as beginners and using them to create new chords, melodies, and variations in your music. Studying the songs and concepts that Woody presents in this program will help students to break out of ruts and begin playing “up-the-neck” without relying on barre chords or scale patterns. Woody's approach to varying melody and bass lines against each other will also help students to develop a more syncopated and stronger picking technique. This simple and effective method allows students to increase their chord vocabulary by relying on logic instead of memorization.

The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt Volume One
Mississippi John Hurt's appeal was universal, he was very much a musician of his time and place, playing within a tradition, but mapping out his own territory with subtleties of touch, phrasing and use of the guitar that were all his own. Though famed for fingerpicking in the alternating bass style, John would often employ omitted beats or syncopated runs, rather than sticking to an unvaried alternation. Also, unlike many musicians of his region, he was comfortable playing in a variety of keys, routinely working in E, A, D, G, and C in standard tuning, as well as Open D and Open G tunings. This video presents instruction in John Hurt's repertoire, with songs chosen to showcase his playing in different keys. The video lesson includes, at its conclusion, rare documentary silent film footage of Mississippi John Hurt playing guitar at his home in Washington, D.C. The accompanying booklet includes TAB/standard notation transcriptions and lyrics of the songs. 90 minutes.
