Seventh Son (With Sting), Horse To The Water (with George Harrison), Will It Go Round In Circles (With Paul Weller), Valentine Moon (With Sam Brown), Return Of Blues Cowboy (With Joe Strummer), The Hand That Changed Its Mind (With Dr. John), Nobody But You (With Ruby Turner), Revolution (With Stereophonics), I Put A Spell On You (With Mica Paris & Dave Gilmour), Oranges & Lemons (With Suggs), All That You Are (With Eric Bibb), Mademoiselle Will Decide (With Mark Knopfler), Black O'Town Blues (With Van Morrison), Town and Country (With Chris Difford), I Wanna Be Around (With John Cale), I'm Ready (With Steve Winwood), Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (With Marc Almond), T-Bone Shuffle (With Mick Hucknell), Its So Blue (With Paul Carrack), Outskirts Of Town (With Taj Mahal), I'm In The Mood For Love (With Jamiroquai), What Would I Do Without You (With Eric Clapton)
Given the range of music that has echoed around the "Later With Jools" TV studio, Jools Holland ought to be one of the most versatile musicians in Britain, and so he needs to be in the star-studded Small World Big Band. Among other things, he does Georgie-Fame-style rock 'n' roll with Sting, Memphis soul with Paul Weller, slow blues with a hollering Joe Strummer, chugging r'n'b with Dr John (who gives one of the most colourful vocal performances here), some largely unreconstructed Beatles with Stereophonics, some sunny ska with Suggs, a reverb-drenched blues with Knopfler (sadly without a guitar break) and an epic Anthony Newley style lament with Marc Almond. The biggest news is probably the debut of George Harrison's first new song in 10 years, the evocative "Horse To The Water". However, despite the variety, Jools's natural inclinations and his ever-present Rhythm & Blues Orchestra lead much of the music towards big band boogie. Sometimes the blues piano clichés pop up in places that perhaps they shouldn't, but would it be a Jools Holland party without them? --Mark Gilbert

cover The Best of Etta James - CD
I just want to make love to you, I'd rather go blind, Something's got a hold on me, Almost persuaded, Pushover, Only time will tell, If I can't have you - James, Etta & Harvey Fuqua, All I could do was cry, Tell mama, I found a love, I'm gonna take what he's got, I worship the ground you walk on, In the basement - James, Etta & Sugar Pie DeSanto, Loving arms, Losers weepers, Leave your hat on, Stop the wedding, At last,
One of my favourite female blues vocalists Etta has a powerful and poignant voice which ranges through the emotional "I'd rather go blind" to the raunchy "I just wanna make love to you" with equal passion and guts.  Little heard of in the UK until a certain TV advert brought her to our attention, she is well known in the USA and has performed with many major artists.  She has the knack of making a cover version her own and yet the original tracks on her later albums just have to be heard......... unique, saucy, uptempo and sad songs nestle together making a modern blues queen just waiting for more recognition by us --Electric Blues Club (Electric Blues Club Webmaster)

cover Born Under a Bad Sign - Albert King - CD
Born Under a Bad Sign, Crosscut Saw, Kansas City, Oh, Pretty Woman, Down Don't Bother Me, The Hunter, I Almost Lost My Mind, Personal Manager, Laundromat Blues, As The Years Go Passing By, The Very Thought Of You
Born Under A Bad Sign dates back to a time when albums were collections of singles, and when singles, designed for radio and jukebox play, seldom ran for much more than three and a half minutes--often quite a bit less. The advantage of that limitation was that artists had to make an impact fast and firmly. In blues, the tendency of songs to go on a bit had to be curbed to produce performances with punch and point. There are few better examples of this process in action than King's 1960s tracks like "Crosscut Saw", "Born Under A Bad Sign" and his story of hot whispers during the hot wash cycle, "Laundromat Blues". With his thick voice and no-nonsense guitar style, King brought absolute blues credibility to the well-made commercial single, and even tracks that were recorded purely for the album, like the aching slow blues "As The Years Go Passing By", became classics. Reissued with the original funky cover art and 24-bit remastered, Born Under A Bad Sign is one of the foundation stones of a blues collection. --Tony Russell

cover King of the Blues Guitar - Albert King - CD
Laundromat Blues, Overall Junction, Oh, Pretty Woman, Funk-Shun, Crosscut Saw, Down Don't Bother Me, Born Under A Bad Sign, Personal Manager, Kansas City, The Very Thought Of You, The Hunter, I Almost Lost My Mind, As The Years Go Passing By, Cold Feet, You Sure Druve A Hard Bargain, I Love Lucy, You're Gonna Need Me,
These 17 tunes come from King's most fertile period, his 1966-68 tenure at Memphis's Stax Records. Stax chief Jim Stewart had been reluctant to sign blues artists because he felt straight blues wouldn't mesh with Stax's patented Memphis soul. Ironically, the fusion of King's sharp guitar wails with the dynamic rhythms of Booker T. & the MGs--the Stax house band--was what set King apart from other bluesmen. The unique blend produced classic after classic: Booker T. Jones' rolling piano propels "Laundromat Blues". Al Jackson's drum shuffle supports "Crosscut Saw". The driving horns of Andrew Love, Wayne Jackson and Joe Arnold accentuate "Born Under a Bad Sign". King's ripe and mellow vocals are a perfect match for the soul-drenched music while his dramatic string bends leap out. --Marc Greilsamer

cover Live at The Regal - B.B. King - CD
Every Day I Have The Blues, Sweet Little Angel, It's My Own Fault, How Blue Can You Get?, Please Love Me, You Upset Me Baby, Worry, Worry, Woke Up This Mornin', You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now, Help The Poor
Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theatre--the Regal. King's performance is visceral: he sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigour. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get", "Worry, Worry" and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theatre hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome; in fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Ted Drozdowski
What the Critics Say... Jazz Times (12/97, p.144) - "...one of the all-time great blues documents..." Vibe (12/99, p.158) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century
