The early morning downpour nearly prevented this afternoons performance, so we were grateful when the rain stopped! Despite the grey clouds, damp ground and chilly breeze, Seanachie Og set up and retained their woolies to provide us with an afternoon filled with some excellent contemporary Folk and Irish tunes.

Due to the inclement weather and overcast skies that threatened to dump rain over us all, the audience was a little thin on the ground although there were plenty of people wandering throughout the day who stopped to listen and enjoy the band. Some of the instruments suffered with tuning problems due to the damp and chilly breeze that makes the bandstand the coldest place to be, even if it is dryer standing inside than out!!

Undeterred, these consumate professionals played their socks off to cheer us up with a mainly uptempo set of classic and contemporary Irish tunes including Wild Rover, Hot Ashfelt, What I Think Of Thee, Belle of Belfast City, Fields of Athenrye and Back Home In Derry to name but a few. Band leader Michael O'Sullivan kept up a stonking rhythmic beat on the Bodhran as he sang, although all took turns on lead and backing vocals! Will sang and played acoustic guitar whilst Katie and Claire swapped instruments throughout the set as if was completely natural to be multi talented instrumentalists! (Something I'm sure many of us wish were true but never quite managed to achieve ourselves!!)

Highlights for me have to be a fast instrumental reel with Katie on Whistle and Claire on Cello (one of my favourite instruments!) and a slow instrumental ballad with Claire on Flute and Katie on Fiddle that suddenly turned into an upbeat reel so fast that you could hardly see Will and Michael's fingers as they played!!

About the band:

Seanachie Og appearing fresh from their latest tour of Ireland playing traditional Irish tunes, contemporary folk and original songs. The band has played throughout London and successfully toured overseas to Bordeaux, Donegal, Dublin, New York and Toulouse. Formed in 2003 from Sunday night sessions at the Alexandra Pub, High Barnet, the band has a blend of experience, youth, energy, creativity and have built a good reputation for great Irish music.

Line up includes band leader/manager Michael O'Sullivan (bodhran/vocals) whose family is from Monaghan, Guildhall School of Music in London Masters Degree student Katie Butler (flute, whistle, fiddle, bass guitar & voice), Australian born Will Hudson (guitar, harmonica, voice) who lived in Belfast for a year and Claire Groom (voice, flute, cello & whistle) who has just completed her degree at Birmingham University.
