We were blessed with beautiful sunshine as the Bear Cat Crawlers kicked off this years Sunday Sessions at Broomfield Park. We had more time to advertise and the word had spread from last year so it was no suprise to see people turning up prepared with picnics and paraphernalia all ready to spend a pleasant afternoon with family and friends listening to the music in such a wonderful setting by the bandstand.
About the band:
Bear Cat Crawlers traditional New Orleans Jazz band were formed by local club member, musician and music teacher Robbie Martin. His group of fellow musicians work as a collective with various members coming together to perform when required. Their professionalism and years of experience enable them to pick up and play with practically anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Line up consists of Robbie Martin on Clarinet, Rick Ross on Drums (Bob Dwyers Hot Seven), Nick Singer on Banjo (x Bob Dwyers Hot Seven), Mick Wilkinson (Double Bass) who has played on the London jazz scene since the early 60's with many bands including The Beale Street Jazz Band 1970 - 1987, The Royal Garden Jazz Band 1980 - 1997. John Lawrence (Trumpet) is a keen Ken Colyer fan who started playing trumpet in the local dance band and ran his own dixieland band for a few years in the 70's. His interest in playing jazz was renewed in 2000, since when he has regularly taken part in parades and jam sessions at weekend jazz festivals. He recently joined the five-piece PG Stompers from Surrey. Johnny Jeanes (Trombone) played guitar and trumpet as a young man. After leaving RAF he switched to trombone "definitely his instrument" in order to join the north London based Dave Nelson Marlborough Jazz Band which already had a trumpet player. He later played with the legendary Crane River Band. After a break of almost 40 years Johnny started playing again two years ago and is now rehearsing with the Frog Island Band.
