cover Songbird - Eva Cassidy - CD
Fields Of Gold, Wade In The Water, Autumn Leaves, Wayfaring Stranger, Songbird, Time Is A Healer, I Know You By Heart, People Get Ready, Oh, I Had A Golden Thread, Over The Rainbow
Songbird cherry-picks tracks from the three locally released albums of Eva Cassidy, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals went virtually unheard outside her native Washington, D.C., during her short 33 years with us. Lost to melanoma in 1996, Cassidy sang with an unaffected purity and an astonishing ability to make both classic and contemporary songs sound like they were written just for her. Sting's "Fields Of Gold" finally lives up to its title through the alchemy of Cassidy's transcendent rendition, while other tracks on this anthology showcase her ease in the realms of pop (Christine McVie's "Songbird"), soul ("People Get Ready"), gospel ("Wade On The Water") and traditional standards ("Autumn Leaves" and "Over The Rainbow"). Framed by understated jazz and pop arrangements, Cassidy's clear, soulful voice and exquisite phrasing make her that rarest of vocalists whose interpretations are a complement to any song. A fine introduction to a true talent. --Billy Grenier

cover Time after Time - Eva Cassidy - CD
Kathy's Song, Ain't No Sunshine, The Letter, At Last, Time After Time, Penny To My Name, I Wandered By A Brookside, I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again, Easy Street Dream, Anniversary Song, Woodstock, Way Beyond The Blue
The story of Eva Cassidy--her phenomenal talent, her innocence, simplicity and lack of worldly ambition, and her sudden death from cancer at the age of 33--has caught the public imagination in a most remarkable way, especially in Britain. Once heard, Eva Cassidy's voice is unforgettable. Her tone was pure and clear, unclouded by vibrato and unwavering in pitch, but she could manipulate it to take in husky blues, ringing ballads or simple, unadorned folksong. It was all too much for record company executives. They didn't know what to do with such unlimited talent. As a result, she recorded very little, mostly in the small Washington DC studio of her friend, bassist Chris Biondo. That is where most of these tracks originate and there are some gorgeous performances among them. They make an moving introduction to the all-too-short career of a great popular singer. --Dave Gelly

cover Definitive Ray Charles - 2 CD's
All Ray Charles fans will want to check out The Definitive Ray Charles, because it's the first time a compiler has been able to combine the chart-topping hits from his Atlantic and ABC-Paramount years into one package. This means that we get the Genius's hits from 1953's "Mess Around" right through his golden R&B Atlantic era ("I've Got a Woman", "Drown in My Own Tears", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", "I Believe To My Soul", "What'd I Say" and so on) alongside tracks that were not only massive worldwide hits but helped redefine popular music. "Georgia on My Mind", "Hit The Road Jack", "Unchain My Heart", "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "You Don't Know Me" not only combined superior standards and country songs with Charles's patented soul-gospel vocal style, but they were couched in an orchestral or big band setting that had simply never been utilised in this way prior to Charles's arrival. Those who know of his thorough musical background will not be surprised by this development, one that kept him high in the charts until the mid-60s. This compilation thins out after the classic "In The Heat of the Night", as well it should, his latter-day duets with the Blues Brothers and Willie Nelson tidying thing up nicely. Genius plus compilation good taste: an unbeatable combination. --Keith Shadwick

What the Critics Say...
Entertainment Weekly (3/10/95, p.69) - "...These 19 tracks from '66 to '81 cover the high points of his defining work with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, and alone. They also show how far an average voice, an exorcistic guitar, and blues-on-acid rock can take you..."

Stereophile (12/92, p. 261) - "..[Clapton] hasn't played guitar this well in years, seemingly grateful for the acoustic limitations that let him forego guitar-hero pyrotechnics for a folksy Big Bill Broonzy bag.."

cover Riding with the King - Eric Clapton/B.B. King - CD
Riding With The King, Ten Long Years, Key To The Highway, Marry You, Three O'Clock Blues, Help The Poor, I Wanna Be, Worried Life Blues, Days Of Old, When My Heart Beats Like A Hammer, Hold On I'm Coming, Come Rain Or Come Shine
Eric Clapton and B.B. King first recorded together for one track on King's 1997 album Deuces Wild, an experience so satisfying that they decided they'd better do it again. Before long, Clapton announced on US television that one of his remaining ambitions was to make an entire album with King. Roping in producer Simon Climie, who had been such an integral part of Clapton's hugely successful Pilgrim album, the pair hunkered down in Los Angeles and set to work rejuvenating and re-interpreting a bunch of King's classics including "Ten Long Years", "Three O'Clock Blues", "Help The Poor" and "Days Of Old". They also take on a bunch of other goodies including a slow, bluesey reading of Sam & Dave's "Hold On I'm Coming" and, appropriately enough, a witty take on John Hiatt's "Riding With The King". They reach back to 1946 for the Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and even dip into the 1930s to resurrect Big Bill Broonzy's "Keys To The Highway", where their trading of tasty acoustic licks is a particular joy. Throughout Riding With The King, Climie has kept the production admirably simple, with King's voice and guitar in one stereo channel while Clapton's is in the other, helping create a vital intimacy, as if they're playing across a small room to each other. --Johnny Black

The inimitable Doors whose music combined with snake hipped Jim Morrisons lyrics and vocals made a unique bluesy/rock sound.  They had a tempetuous career with the Lizard Kings wild on stage antics and his sad death in 1971 but the tunes made an impact in the music world and still influence many of todays musicians.

cover The Free Story - Free
Respected as one of the finest blues rock bands of their time, The Free Story reminds us that there is much more to them than standard classics like "Alright Now". This compilation, spanning all six of their albums, opens in true form with the swaggering groove of "I'm A Mover" taken from Tons Of Sobs. Singer Paul Rodgers' soulful wailing and the band's inventive playing brings the blues to life with their own brand of traditional folk and sultry rock. The parade ends with a single track from their final album, Heartbreaker. By this time, founder guitarist Paul Kossoff had left the group, to be replaced by Rodgers on guitar; this accounts for the complimentary song writing on "Come Together In The Morning". Often shadowed by the legendary supergroups of the early 1970s, Free hold a quiet authority as the masters of understatement and pure musical passion. --David Trueman.

cover Damn Right I've Got The Blues - Buddy Guy - CD
This guest-studded album relaunched Buddy Guy's career and set him toward the pinnacle of contemporary blues. Despite turns from Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and others, it's Guy who burns brightest--and loudest. He delivers roaring, exuberant performances of classic R&B ("Mustang Sally"), old-time blues ("Black Night") and house rockers ("Where Is the Next One Coming From"). Most poignant, though, is his seven-minute instrumental "Rememberin' Stevie", which not only rekindles the fiery spirit of his own youth, but pays sensitive tribute to his late friend and admirer Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is the blueprint for Guy's current performing style. --Ted Drozdowski

cover Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix - CD -
And The Gods Made Love, Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland), Crosstown traffic, Voodoo Chile, Little miss strange, Long hot summer night, Come on (let the good times roll), Gypsy eyes, Burning of the midnight lamp, Rainy day dream away, 1983 (a merman I should turn to be), Moon turn the tides...gently gently away, Still raining, still dreaming, House burning down, All along the watchtower, Voodoo Child (slight return)
If it's true that songwriters have a vision in their head of what their dream album would be, Electric Ladyland was the project Jimi Hendrix hoped would be as close to perfection as possible. No longer content with the rush-recorded psychedelic pop-rock of Experienced and Axis, Ladyland was an exploration of what could be achieved with time, money and experience. Jimi's soul roots from his session days shine through for the first time with the laid-back groove of the title track and the doo-woppy "Long Hot Summer Night" showing a vocal style reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. It's hard to pick a standout piece as the quality of the album is so high, but the four-part dream segue of "Rainy Day", "1983", "Moon Turn the Tides" and "Still Raining" is a monumental piece of early prog rock continuing the acid-soaked ideal of extraterrestrials, love, peace and war that he started earlier on with "Third Stone from the Sun". However, it's not all spectacular drawn-out blues jams and sublime soundscapes, Electric Ladyland managed to produce Jimi's only UK No. 1 single, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" plus the timeless classics "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along the Watchtower" making it arguably the best studio album the Experience produced in their brief career together.--David Trueman
