Outside Lookin In Peter Mitchell (Stratmaster): Outside Looking In
The autobiography of a struggling musician, working over 30 years gigging on the road. Life has its price, and one way or another; we will all have to pay for it. On invitation, I went to see a famous clairvoyant called, 'Madame Faye'. Her prediction of the assassination of president J.F. Kennedy brought her worldwide recognition. I was a total sceptic and we had never met before. In retrospect, everything she told me about my past was true, and what is stunning beyond belief, is the fact that all the major events in this book, were predicted in detail by 'Madame Faye' to me, at her house in the summer of 1966. The last thing she said to me was, 'you will be successful with your music, but only after a long hazardous journey, and you'll have to sacrifice everything for it. For most musicians, it's usually a case of playing for fun. Some play professionally, and others make the 'Big time'. I take the view, that a real musician is rarer still. He doesn't play to survive - HE SURVIVES TO PLAY. My only credentials for having this point of view are some thirty years playing on the pub and club scene and still gigging strong.

Spinning Blues into Gold
The Chess Brothers and the Rise of the Blues
Nadine Cohodas
Paperback
New York Times Book Review: 'An in-depth, fact-and-story-rich tour through an important moment in American popular culture'. Occasionally musical history is made not by performers, but by a record label. Sun Records brought us rock 'n' roll; Motown is eponymous with its brand of soulful pop. With the blues, one Chicago label was responsible: Chess. Chess discovered just about every major artist - Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James, Buddy Guy. The classic songs include 'No Particular Place to Go', 'I've Got My Mojo Working' and 'Hoochie Coochie Man'. No wonder the young Rolling Stones, touring America, wanted to record at Chess's ramshackle studios.

State of the Blues: The Living Legacy of the Delta
by Jeff Dunas (Photographer), William Ferris (Introduction), John Lee Hooker (Preface)
Hardcover
Powerfully evocative photographs and voices that capture the lasting power and universal appeal of the blues. State of the Blues is the photographer Jeff Dunas's stirring tribute to the blues, a vital American musical tradition. One of the earliest expressions of African American culture, the blues makes poetry of sorrow and finds humor and bitter irony in the hardships of life. It tells of loves lost and regained, and of the fight for dignity in a world that judges people by the color of their skin. Alongside a series of intimate portraits of the greatest blues performers of our time--including B. B. King, Koko Taylor, Charlie Musselwhite, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and many others--the book presents Dunas's timeless photographs of the landmarks and byways of the Blues Highway, a heritage trail through the American South that leads from New Orleans to Chicago, where the blues continues to thrive today. A Preface by the legendary blues performer John Lee Hooker sets the stage for this unprecedented look at the state of the blues. In his Introduction, the noted blues scholar William Ferris, founder of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, provides the cultural and historical context for Dunas's remarkable photographs. A series of riveting interviews with leading blues performers lends immediacy to the book.
